Tony Halley was with the Department of Civil Aviation in Leigh Creek,
S.A. in the sixties when he was offered a ride in an Adastra Hudson
on an aeromagnetic survey of the Gammon Ranges. Tony took this remarkable
photo of the magnetometer bird as it was being deployed or recovered.
The Hudson is believed to be VH-AGE which was conducting an aeromagnetic
survey in South Australia from January to April 1965. To achieve this
unusual perspective, Tony stuck his head and camera through the open
camera hatch while one of the crew held him by the legs. Hudson VH-AGE
had a camera hatch at
the rear of the cabin offset to starboard
(circled in red), hence the location of the towing cable at the top
of the frame as the winch was mounted on the centreline.
