EARLY STARTS &THE ILLUMINATED
THUMB.
by Wal Bowles
On oil survey
work we would frequently set the alarm for about 3.30 am in southern
Queensland, especially with summer approaching, to be airborne by
first light. Bill Mitchell undoubtedly thought he should have slumbered
on for another few minutes at least because, standing near a wingtip
when he was seeing the aircraft off from the tarmac, he would give
a thumbs up to indicate we were clear to go - but he would shine
his torch on his thumb!
